Confidentiality -- what is that all about?

All information revealed by you is held strictly confidential and will not be revealed to any other person or agency without your written permission. However, there are occasions when information may have to be disclosed, such as:

1. when I strongly believe that you may be a danger to yourself or to others, or are in danger;

2. where there is a suspicion of abuse of a vulnerable person that you know of;

3. where a court orders me to turn over records or to appear in court.

As a therapist, I have a legal responsibility to comply with provincial laws and to notify the proper authorities under these circumstances. However, I will not do so without your foreknowledge and a discussion on potential consequences.

Finally, in order to protect your right to confidentiality, if we were to run into one another in a public place, I will acknowledge you only if you approach me first.
